![]() ![]() The majority of Reboot focuses on Wren training Callum to be more resilient, so that he’ll take orders, and therefore not get shot. ![]() Without reading the blurb you knew this was where the romance was going to start, and it made for a very interesting dynamic as the pair are pretty much opposites…or so we think. Wren is supposed to be one of the toughest Reboots, because of her number, but when it comes to training a new Reboot, she picks Callum, the 22, when she normally goes from the highest number available. In the very beginning she seemed to have a wide scope of emotions, perhaps this was because she’d been conditioned by her roommate to be a little friendlier, but it would have made more sense for her to take on a more robotic personality. She was dead for 178 minutes before she rebooted, which meant she was the ‘least human’, however I felt this was sort of forgotten. I thoroughly enjoyed Wren’s character development. ![]() I’d wanted to read Reboot for a while, but was unsure on the premise, because it seemed like something I perhaps wouldn’t enjoy, however I was pleasantly surprised. However, every six months, they can participate in a Delay, a stay of execution granted to them by being subjected to scientific and medical experiments that the wealthy can then benefit from. They do not see any of the other prisoners, and they are confined to their cells for the most part. ![]() This prison is called The Loop, and its prisoners are subjected to some pretty horrible stuff. The Loop follows Luka Kane, a teenager who has been in prison for over two years. The Loop by Ben Oliver feels like a standard action-oriented science-fiction dystopia that does not challenge the reader and barely scratches the surface of its own world. Upon my realization that this dark horse was YA, I knew I was going to have reservations but I still tried to go into it with an open mind. ![]() This is all to say that you should take this review with a grain of salt. Granted, I just said I have not read a lot of YA, so I’m generalizing it with my most memorable experiences. It has just never resonated with me, and continues to be low on my literary priorities list. I didn’t read a lot of it growing up, and as I get older I have an even harder time considering it. ![]() ![]() These two novels together could create a very interesting book discussion. This story reminded me a lot of Patricia Reilly Giff’s new novel Gingersnap about the same time period that also involves an unexplained character. But, these characters eventually help to show Bee that she matters to the world and her existence is important to the people around her. ![]() I didn’t care these characters as much as the other people Bee encounters throughout the story. ![]() I think I would have preferred the story to have remained a little more historical/realistic fiction. When Bee sets up house in an abandoned home she meets another mysterious old woman who looks as though she belongs in another era. After her parents died, Bee began seeing a woman in an orange, floppy hat, but later finds that she is the only one who can see her. ![]() I liked the story itself, Bee is a very believable character and the supporting characters are well-thought out and full of life. Pauline, Bee’s guardian is one of a only a few people who truly see Bee as she is, but when Pauline is sent to work at another carnival, Bee decides to leave the only world she have ever known to find a home that she has only dreamed about. She was born with a birthmark on her face in the shape of a diamond and is often faced with the taunts and jeers of the children (and adults) who come to the carnival when it pulls into town. Beholding Bee written by Kimberly Newton Fusco is about orphaned “Bee” who lives and works in a traveling carnival. ![]() ![]() Where you’d normally find the copyright details, instead there are instructions on things not to do while reading the book (whatever you do, don’t dog-ear the pages) and some unlikely production notes (“Printed in a nomad’s tent in the desert of Lop”). ![]() The design of Tales of the Peculiar helps achieve this effect. Riggs says he wanted the new book to seem like an artifact from the peculiar world, an imaginary object that readers somehow discover in their real-world bookstores. It traces the improbable career and tumultuous private life of a charismatic genius who rose to fame on his "If it's big, hit it." 92 illustrations "Up Front" featured the wise-cracking Willie and Joe, whose stooped shoulders, mud-soaked uniforms, and pidgin of army slang and slum dialect bore eloquent witness to the world of combat and the men who lived―and died―in it.This taut, lushly illustrated biography―the first of two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Bill Mauldin―is illustrated with more than ninety classic Mauldin cartoons and rare photographs. Week after week, Mauldin defied army censors, German artillery, and Patton's pledge to "throw his ass in jail" to deliver his wildly popular cartoon, "Up Front," to the pages of Stars and Stripes. "The real war," said Walt Whitman, "will never get in the books." During World War II, the truest glimpse most Americans got of the "real war" came through the flashing black lines of twenty-two-year-old infantry sergeant Bill Mauldin.
